Central World is a Big complex at the middle of Bangkok City. Now its ablaze.

Violence in Bangkok

Violence erupted at several locations in Bangkok after some red-shirt leaders turned themselves in to police on Wednesday afternoon.

Several red-shirt leaders including Natthawut Saikua, Jatuporn Prompan, Kwanchai Praipana, Nisit Sintuprai, Yoswarit Chuklom and Whiphutalaeng Pattanaphuthai were seen surrendering to police at the Royal Thai Police headquarters at about 1.30pm.

But three other leaders -- Arisman Pongruengrong, Weng Tojirakarn and Arisman Pongruengrong -- did not surrender.

Red-shirt leader Jatuporn Prompan announced from the stage at 1.15pm that that he and other leaders would surrender to prevent further losses.

"I apologise to you all but I don't want any more losses. I am devastated too. We will surrender," he said.

He also announced the ending of the anti-government protest.

But the announcement did not put the end to waves of riotting and arsoning around the capital. Many key buildings were set ablaze such as upmarket Central World shopping complex near the Ratchaprasong intersection, the TV Channel 3 station, a section of the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) building and the Metropolitan Electricity Authority Office were set ablaze.

The Channel 3 was forced to stop broadcasting in the late afternoon after the Maleenont building was set on fire. Employees of the network had to flee to the building's top floor waiting for evacuation by helicopter.

There were many incidents of vandalism as rioters burned down public properties such as phone booths and bank branches.

Bangkok Post reporters have also been evacuated from the building at about 2.30pm, after clashes were reported near the office building and a bank's branch a short distance away was set on fire.

The Centre for the Resolution of Emergency Situation (CRES), meanwhile, imposed a curfew in Bangkok during 8pm to 6am. Thais and foreign residents were asked to stay home. Those who need to travel outside Bangkok and overseas were told to carry passports and travel documents.

The mopping-up operations were expected to continue throughout the night as military forces try to contain hard-core protesters and other rioters.

Total (1 wicket; 2.4 overs) 11 (4.12 runs per over)

A short break in play as they attempt to fix a glitch in the screen behind the bowler's arm. Frustrating really, not sure what the hold-up is but Kieswetter is going to have to get his mind right and keep the momentum going after this lengthy break.
2.4
Nannes to Kieswetter, FOUR, 150.4 kph, yep, much happier with the ball pitched up is Kieswetter. This one was full and on the legs and he flicked it up and over wide mid on for a counter-punching boundary
2.3
Nannes to Kieswetter, no run, 150.4 kph, Kieswetter is looking a little rattled out there now, this was short of a length again and he backed away a touch but didn't really move his feet apart from that, swishing airily outside off as the ball whizzed past
2.2
Nannes to Kieswetter, no run, 144.2 kph, and again! This one was slightly shorter, giving Kieswetter a millisecond longer to react and sway out of the way, but a sharp bouncer all the same
2.1
Nannes to Kieswetter, no run, 148.4 kph, sharp bouncer from Nannes! Banged in half way down, and Kieswetter ducked out of the way just in the nick of time
End of over 2 (4 runs) England 7/1 (141 runs required from 18 overs, RR: 3.50, RRR: 7.83)

Tait to Pietersen, no run, 151.1 kph, a touch of swing from Tait there as he flung the ball down on a length, but KP got firmly behind it and immediately found the middle of the bat as he pushed the ball firmly to mid off
This will be the wicket Australia are after
And out comes Kevin Pietersen...
1.5
Tait to Lumb, OUT, 152.7 kph, Gone! Tait strikes in his first over! It was pitched up, taking Lumb somewhat by surprise. He whipped meatily to leg, getting a good connection to the shot, but hit it uppishly and straight to a wide-ish mid on, who clung on gratefully!
MJ Lumb c DJ Hussey b Tait 2 (4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 50.00
1.4
Tait to Kieswetter, 1 run, 156.3 kph, sharp single, drop and run from England's openers
1.3
Tait to Kieswetter, 2 runs, 150.3 kph, timing from Kieswetter! He was expecting the short ball and was very deep in the crease. The ball was hurled down on a length and he aimed a defensive push through the off side, finding the gap nicely and timing it too
1.2
Tait to Kieswetter, no run, dug in, but Kieswetter is back and across in a flash to tuck him firmly to square leg, but straight to the fielder
1.1
Tait to Lumb, 1 run, 154.8 kph, back of a length to start, half-guided off the outer half of the bat down to third man. Pacy start

WORLD CUP CRICKET FINAL -FIRST INNING

first inning: Australia 147/6 (120 ov)
England
England won the toss and elected to field
This time it is the greatest opportunity for English to lift up the world cup.
England have won the toss and decided to bowl first in the final of the ICC World Twenty20 against Australia at the Kensington Oval.
Brief Preview
Australia's brute batting force and consistent bowling will be put to the test by a spirited England when the two rivals clash in Sunday's final of the World T20.
Australia go into the match with sky-high confidence after chasing down a seemingly improbable 191 against Pakistan in the semifinals on Friday night.
But it would hardly be a stroll in the park for Michael Clarke's men as England have played some outstanding cricket in the championship and just like Australia, they have been unbeaten since the Super Eights stage.
Teams

Australia: DA Warner, SR Watson, MJ Clarke (Captain), DJ Hussey, CL White, MEK Hussey, BJ Haddin (WK), SPD Smith, MG Johnson, SW Tait, DP Nannes

England: MJ Lumb, C Kieswetter (WK), KP Pietersen, PD Collingwood (Captain), EJG Morgan, LJ Wright, TT Bresnan, MH Yardy, GP Swann, SCJ Broad, RJ Sidebottom

World Cup Football- History

Renowned for producing some of the finest football, the World Cup is an event that enthralls the world every four years. Whilst the modern incarnation is a glitzy, all-singing, all-dancing affair, the global get-together of old were rather humbler affairs.

In 1930, then FIFA president Jules Rimet planned for the inaugural World Cup tournament to be held in Uruguay. It was to serve as a platform to promote football on the world stage.

The associations and federations of various nations were invited to send a squad each. However, the choice of Uruguay as the host nation meant an arduous and expensive trip across the Atlantic Ocean for the European teams. It was not surprising that no European nation accepted the invitation up until two months before the start of the Cup.

Rimet successfully convinced Belgium, France, Romania and Yugoslavia to each send a squad to Uruguay. A total of thirteen nations took part in the inaugural World Cup – seven from South America, four from Europe and two from North America.

The first two matches involved France and the USA, who dispatched Mexico 4-1 and Belgium 3-0 respectively. The first goal in the World Cup was scored by Lucien Laurent, a Frenchman.

In the final, host nation Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2 before a capacity crowd of 93,000 in Montevideo, becoming the first holders of the Jules Rimet trophy.

There were problems holding the early editions of the World Cup, namely the difficulties of intercontinental travel and war. Only Brazil participated in the 1934 and 1938 tournaments, with the rest of the South American nations highly reluctant to go the distance. The 1942 and 1946 editions of the competition were cancelled due to World War II and the aftermath.

British teams first debuted in the World Cup in 1950. Countries from the UK first withdrew from FIFA in 1920, as a boycott in protest of foreign influences on the game, as well as their unwillingness to play against countries they were at war with. Great Britain rejoined FIFA in 1946 upon invitation.

The 1950 edition of the tournament also saw the reemergence of 1930 champions Uruguay, who had also boycotted the previous two World Cups. The South American nation won the tournament in a final that would be forever known as the ‘Maracanazo’.

Between 1934 and 1978, each World Cup finals tournament only allowed for 16 teams in its format, except on two occasions: In 1938, when Austria were part of Germany after it had qualified, making it 15 teams in the finals, and in 1950, when India, Scotland and Turkey withdrew from the tournament, leaving 13 teams to contest for the coveted trophy.

Most of the early participating nations in the World Cup were from the European and South American continent, with small doses of North American, African, Asian and Oceania football on display. Teams from the minority were usually given a hiding by the stronger European and South American teams.

Until 1982, the only teams from outside Europe and South America to advance out of the first round were: USA, semi-finalists in 1930; Cuba, quarter-finalists in 1938; Korea DPR, quarter-finalists in 1966; and Mexico, quarter-finalists in 1970.

The finals were expanded to 24 teams in 1982, then to 32 in 1998, allowing equal and more participation from Africa, Asia and North America. The one exception is Oceania, which has never had a guaranteed spot in the finals.

In the more recent editions of the World Cup, teams from outside Europe and South America have had more joy in the competition, and those who have reached the quarter-finals include Mexico in 1986, Cameroon in 1990, Senegal and the USA in 2002, as well as the Korean Republic, who came in fourth in 2002.

However, European and South American sides have remained the talk of the tournament, with all the quarter-finalists coming from both regions in 2006.

For the record, 198 nations attempted to qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, and a record 204 attempted to qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Low awaiting Ballack injury news

Germany coach Joachim Low is awaiting news on the fitness of Michael Ballack after he injured an ankle n Chelsea's FA Cup final win.
Ballack was the victim of a heavy tackle by Portsmouth's Kevin-Prince Boateng, who could be an opponent of Germany at the World Cup this summer if he makes the cut in Ghana's 23-man squad.
Preliminary x-rays confirmed that no bones were broken, but Ballack will undergo a scan on Sunday to assess the full extent of the damage.
"I have tried to get hold of him but have not been able to," said Low.
"I have heard that nothing is broken, which is a relief, and that he will undergo a scan tomorrow (Sunday). I hope he gets good news from the hospital.
"Of course we need our captain. He has so much experience."
After watching video footage of the foul, Low was critical of Boateng's challenge. The midfielder recently switched allegiances from Germany to Ghana after seeing his chances of breaking into Low's squad limited.
"He had no chance of getting the ball and a foul like that can seriously injure a player," Low told ZDF television.
Ballack, who had clashed with Boateng only minutes before the incident, felt that his opponent had set out to hurt him.
"I hope not, but the images indicate that he did (mean it)," said the Germany captain.

Bangkok Unrest

Bangkok is the capital, largest urban area and primary city of Thailand. Known in Thai as Krung Thep Mahanakhon (Thai: กรุงเทพมหานคร, pronounced [krūŋtʰêːp máhǎːnákʰɔːn] ( listen)), or กรุงเทพฯ Krung Thep ( (listen) (help·info), meaning "City of the Deity") for short, it was a small trading post at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River during the Ayutthaya Kingdom. It came to the forefront of Siam when it was given the status as the capital city in 1768 after the burning of Ayutthaya.
When the red shirt leaders decided to occupy the Ratchaprasong intersection on April 3, no one expected that this large commercial district in central Bangkok, with exclusive shopping malls and five-star hotels, would be closed for long. It is estimated that shops in the area have lost up to 300 million baht a day during the red occupation
The red shirt protest has also affected hundreds of other small businesses located within a three square kilometre area. Many small shops face bankruptcy and closure, with thousands of employees losing their jobs and livelihoods.

So how did this "Red City" in the heart of the capital come to be, with its own infrastructure and services able to feed and accommodate tens of thousands of protesters every day?

Thousands of red shirt supporters from all over Thailand - as well as Bangkok - filled the primitively fortified Ratchaprasong rally area and adjacent roads, transforming it into a fortress.

Major roads were barricaded to control access, and people and vehicles were searched by red shirt guards and even ex-paramilitary rangers wearing dark uniforms

Bangkok no entry zones declared

The Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) has declared the Phetchaburi Expressway intersection on Phetchaburi Road and from the Ratchathewi intersection to Sam Yan intersection on Phaya Thai Road no entry zones, reports said.

The declaration of the no entry zones was to allow troops to take full control of the two roads near the Ratchaprasong intersection red shirt rally site. It was a measure declared as part of the plan to limit the rally area of the red-shirted supporters of the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD).
